Imagine that you are cruising along on the highway at a very high speed in your Honda Prosmatic i-VTEC Oriel.

And then suddenly you have to apply the brakes because you see a deer right in front of you. If you are driving your Honda Civic at 90 MPH, then it might require the length of a football field to come to a complete stop. And we are talking 100% fully functional brakes here. If there is anything wrong in the ABS system or if the brake pads are worn out, then you are in for a real nightmare.

With that said, the above can be easily avoided if you take care of the following steps regarding brake servicing and maintenance:

The Brake Lights

Your Honda vehicle has a perfectly visible set of brake lights.  Apart from that, there is also a small light on the dashboard that might indicate that there is something wrong with the braking system of your car. In the Honda Civic, this light performs a double duty as a hand brake light as well as an indicator that your car does not have sufficient brake oil in the system.

In case this light flashes red even after you lower the hand brake, it means that your brake fluid is very low and soon you will lose your whole braking system. In this case, you should immediately stop the car and check the brake fluid level. If it is low, you should take it to the nearest Honda service center ASAP. Be careful to drive very slowly.

Taking Care of the Brake Pads and Shoes

Most Hondas are either equipped with disk brakes or in case of old and vintage models shoe brakes. Some of them even sport a combination of the two. However, the pads on the disk can eventually become worn out. If that happens, they will not be able to generate the grip necessary to stop your Honda on the spot.  If you feel that the brakes have a longer response time than usual, then the pads are probably worn out due to prolonged use.

A common way to find out if your Honda’s brake pads need replacement is to brake very suddenly on a clear road, when there is no traffic around.  If you hear a grinding or a crunching sound, then the brake pads need to be changed.

Conclusion

Brakes are absolutely vital for your safety and as such there should be no compromise in terms of their checkups, routine maintenance,  and repairs.

We are currently offering a brake inspection package for your vehicle.
