"A picture is worth a thousand words" or so the expression goes.

If you believe this proverb, it is easy to understand that pictures are part of effective signage. Research has shown that we remember visual images much easier and better than words. Intuitively we all understand this. It is much easier to give directions that include visual landmarks than directing someone by each individual street name or number. The visual landmark becomes a quick recognizable short cut to get us to what we want. This is also true with signs.
"Words Only" Signs Convey Information
Now there is some basic information that people look for in signs... business name, store hours, address, website, etc. You don't want your business to be a mystery. Current and prospective customers want to feel confident that they are in the right place. But words only are not likely to get you to memorable. The big opportunity is to visually convey the benefits you can provide for your customers and the personality or style with which you can deliver those benefits.

Images and Text Work Together[/caption]
For example, Mr. Peter Aminov knew this when he was looking to draw people into his business and help them visually recall the services he has to offer. Mr. Aminov is in the business of making people look and feel good. He owns and operates the
North Towne Barbershop, a local barber shop in Bellevue, WA. His barber shop already had a large outdoor sign. His door already displayed his store hours. But what Mr. Aminov really wanted to show prospective customers were the benefits of his service.
"Image" and "Image + Words" Signs Convey Benefits
It takes only the addition of a color, a stylized font, or a graphic design element to start injecting character and memorability into a sign. Adding photographs or illustrations takes you even further in adding context to what you do for your customers. All these add up to a more memorable sign. Mr. Aminov worked with
RainMaker Signs to create visual imagery via
window graphics above his door featuring images of classic barber services. These images offered authenticity and context to his establishment. Additionally, Mr. Aminov had a classic turn of the century barber chair. An image of that cool chair is now prominently featured in his front window. These images work with his text based signs to convey the high quality, yet traditional experience you can expect from his services.
