Essential Questions to Ask about Your Vehicle Wraps and Vehicle Graphics

1.  What is a Wrap?

A “wrap” is essentially just a big sticker or decal.  This pressure-sensitive, adhesive-backed, vinyl material is coated with a special glue on the back.  This glue is initially in microscopic bubbles that are not really sticky until the material is applied with pressure and the bubbles pop releasing the glue.  The material can be produced two ways: cut from vinyl that comes from prefabricated colors or digitally printed onto the vinyl with your custom design.

2. Do You Use Brand Name Vinyls?

First, you want to ask if the company you are working with uses brand name vinyl or private label vinyl.  Well established brands like 3M, Avery Dennison, Oracal, and Arlon all invest in developing top of the line products, testing those products, and guaranteeing their performance.  With private label off brand vinyl is impossible to determine the quality or consistency of the product.   There can be variation in quality from one use to the next, so knowing that it worked well before is no guarantee that it will hold up well again.

3.  Is the Vinyl Specifically Formulated for Vehicle Wraps?

For most people, vinyls all look alike.  In fact, they are not alike.  Cast vinyls, for example, are formulated and produced to comply and fit any shape or curve with the application of some heat.  Other vinyls, like calendared vinyls or sign vinyls, are formulated specifically for flat surfaces.   The sign vinyls are less expensive and a perfect choice for traditional flat signs and walls, BUT they will not hold up well on curved or convex surfaces.  The big brand name manufacturers produce both types of vinyls, so be sure to ask, not just about the brand name, but also that the vinyl is a cast vinyl designed for vehicles or other curved surfaces.

4.  Do you laminate your vinyl before applying it to the vehicle?

Confirm that your printed or cut vinyl will be laminated before it is applied to your vehicle.  This is another areas where vehicle wrap companies try to save money but you will pay the price.  This is especially true for digitally printed graphics.   Laminating the graphics will protect the appearance and quality of your vehicle wrap in a couple ways.  First, the laminates have built in UV protection that will prevent your vehicle wrap from fading.  You want to present a quality image of your brand, and a faded vehicle wrap sends the wrong message about your business and brand.  Secondly, the inks for digitally printed graphics are pretty durable but can be scratched or abraded if not protected.  A cast laminate will provide protection for our graphics so they keep your vehicle looking new and sharp.

5.  How Much Experience Do you Have Wrapping Vehicles?

When it comes to wrapping vehicles, experience matters.   Wrapping vehicles is a hands on skill.  Vehicle wrap specialists develop a good sense for handling the materials and understanding how the materials conform.  They have attention to detail and take pride in the finished product.  We believe they should.   They treat your vehicle with great care.  They also understand that most commercial vehicles are leased and need to be returned in top condition.   You should feel welcome to asks to meet the person who will be wrapping your vehicle.
