Federal judges have ruled that California must significantly reduce the number of inmates in its prisons. According to the judges, the state’s prison system is at about 200% of capacity. Overcrowded prison system causes unconstitutional conditions violating prisoner’s rights.
Implementing the court’s ruling will result in 40%, which is up to 58,000 prisoners, going free, Cate, California’s corrections and rehabilitation secretary said, describing it as a threat to public safety.
A final ruling will also reduce the number of people entering the prison system, with many going into rehabilitation programs instead of going to jail, Don Specter said, director of the Prison Law Office, a group that provides free legal services to California prisoners.
