LOOSE GAS CAP

Check engine lights have become a way of life for modern mechanics. They have been around since the 80’s but really became prevalent with the move to OBDII (on board diagnosis II) in 1996.

There are literally hundreds of things that can make a check engine light come on. What is the most common reason? It’s a loose gas cap. You have to remove and reinstall your gas cap at least several times a month. They are designed to click when you have them tight. Unless you’re the type who memorized every word in your owner’s manual you may not know this. Many people would say,” I may not be very mechanical but certainly I can put a gas cap on”. What they don’t know is that it must click. If it doesn’t it will not seal completely and when the car self tests itself for evaporative emissions it will have a little tiny leak and that is enough to turn on the light.
