Arlington, VA – Goal-Setting & Achieving Advice from a Local Business Coach

Posted in: Industry News

What drove me to become a certified business and executive coach is helping other entrepreneurs take decisive action over their personal and professional lives. To become successful in business, entrepreneurs must take a step-by-step approach to create goals conducive to business growth and follow through on achieving them. I want to help you achieve the goals necessary to scale your business by sharing some strategies I use with my clients in business coaching sessions.

Year-In-Review

Knowing how you’ve progressed in achieving the goals you’ve created for your business within the last year or two will give you clarity in setting new goals. Review your goal progress with your partners, executives, leaders, and managers: where have you succeeded and stagnated? Get answers to questions such as:

  • What goals did you have and accomplish in the recent past?
  • Where have you excelled in your business?
  • What goals were unsuccessful in the previous year and why?
  • Where has your business stagnated or declined?

This process involves having a critical discussion with your team. A great benefit of hiring a business coach is our ability to act as objective facilitators to sustain open and honest dialogue.

Review Your Business Plan

Another way to gain clarity in setting new goals is to review your business plan and see if it still reflects your mission, purpose, and vision. If those have changed, updating your business plan will give you more ideas on what goals you need to accomplish to become re-aligned.

Prioritize

Create a list of the most valuable tasks for goal achievement, improvement, and growth. You and your team should reach clarity of their responsibilities to achieve the results you’re seeking.

Create a New Strategic Plan

Using the information you’ve gathered from your reviews and assessments, begin the strategic planning process by gathering the people you need, such as executives, vendors, partners, and even long-standing customers. Then creating a date, time, and place to proceed with the planning process.

The Pursuit of Goals

Goal achievement should be a strategic step-by-step process called GOSPA:

  • Goals
  • Objectives
  • Strategies
  • Plans
  • Actions

We follow this structure in pursuing goals to leave no stone unturned.

Setting Smart Goals

We regularly refer to the SMART method to establish a properly-stated goal.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Aligned
  • Realistic
  • Timebound

Your goals should be tangible: vague goals are elusive and are more difficult to achieve. Once you’ve mastered the method of creating purposeful ones, it will serve you throughout the rest of your career.

Plan and Prioritize

What gets planned gets done: create specific deadlines for your most significant tasks and state who is responsible for completing them.

Conduct Check-Ins

Schedule weekly, monthly, bi-weekly, or bi-monthly check-ins to stay on track with goal achievement.
