Window Perf is becoming a very popular item among many small and large size businesses. Perf allows for visibility from the inside out while presenting a rich dynamic image to those viewing the storefront or large format image from the outside.

We often think that windows and signs or vehicle graphics don’t mix because most people don’t want to sacrifice the things we love about windows like sunshine or people watch for the benefits of advertising. Of course all that can change due to the magic of perforated materials, which make sharp window graphics a snap, all without sacrificing natural light (or your personal reality TV). Adding window perf (as its often called) to your vehicle wrap or retail window space is a great way to improve the design flow and take better advantage of your available space.

What is perforated material? Essentially its any material with a series of small holes punched in it. The perforations let light in while the graphics printed on the remaining material stay clear. Pretty simple, right?

How does working with perforated material differ from other less holy materials? We did a little research for you and came up with the following points…

1. Go BIG or Go Home! When you’re working with a perforated material, its always a good idea to err on the side of larger text. Smaller fonts tend to get lost in the holes, where as you can be certain that larger letters will ensure full legibility. Our material manufacturer recommends using a font size of 30 or larger.
2. Bright Colors are Best! It doesn’t matter if your business specializes in goth apparel and gravestones, your window perf shouldn’t have wide spaces of only dark colors. Its not that our bubbly personalities are all pastel all the time, 0ur eyes naturally focus on the brighter colors, whereas we tend to focus through darker colors. Using a completely dark palate may satisfy your tortured soul, but it’ll negate your use of window perf.
3. While we’re on the subject of darkness, what about lighting? Window perf graphics work best when there is more light on the printed side. This normally isn’t a problem with exterior window graphics because the sun does plenty to illuminate those. However, if you’re in a shopping center with very uniform lighting on both sides of your windows, you may want to consider setting up additional lighting to make the most of your retail window graphics.
4. When you’re creating the image, its a good idea to add 10% to 20% more contrast that you would to a normal image. No, we’re not trying to make everything look funky and flourescent, the perforations tend to make the image loose reflectivity. The additional contrast helps to compensate for that loss and will make the graphics look normal once they’re applied.
